China has 250+ airports and 20+ airlines. Domestic flights are frequent, affordable, and connect virtually every city. For long distances — Beijing to Kunming, Shanghai to Chengdu — flying is the obvious choice.
But China’s airports and airlines work differently from what you’re used to. Booking platforms, ID checks, security rules, baggage limits, and budget airline traps all catch foreigners off guard.
This guide covers the entire process: when to fly vs take the train, which airlines to choose, how to book, airport procedures, and the mistakes that cost tourists money.
Quick Answer: Flight or Train?#
| Distance | Flight Time | HSR Time | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 500 km | Not worth it | 1–2 h | Train |
| 500–1,000 km | 1.5–2.5 h | 2–4 h | Train (city center to center) |
| 1,000–1,500 km | 2–3 h | 5–8 h | Depends — compare total time + price |
| Over 1,500 km | 2.5–4.5 h | 8–14 h | Flight (saves 3–8 hours) |
The rule: If high-speed rail takes under 5 hours, take the train. You depart from and arrive in the city center, no airport transfers, no security lines, no weather delays.
The exception: If the flight is significantly cheaper (common on competitive routes), fly — just factor in airport transfer time and cost.
Airlines: Who to Fly With#
Full-Service Airlines (Recommended for Tourists)#
| Airline | Chinese | Alliance | Hub | Baggage | English Service |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Air China | 国航 | Star Alliance | Beijing | 20–23 kg checked | ✅ Good |
| China Southern | 南航 | SkyTeam | Guangzhou | 20–23 kg checked | ✅ Good |
| China Eastern | 东航 | SkyTeam | Shanghai | 20–23 kg checked | ✅ Good |
| Hainan Airlines | 海航 | — | Haikou/Beijing | 20–23 kg checked | ✅ Good |
| Xiamen Airlines | 厦航 | SkyTeam | Xiamen/Fuzhou | 20 kg checked | ✅ Good |
| Sichuan Airlines | 川航 | — | Chengdu | 20 kg checked | ⚠️ Limited |
| Shenzhen Airlines | 深航 | Star Alliance | Shenzhen | 20 kg checked | ⚠️ Limited |
For tourists: Book with the Big Three (Air China, China Southern, China Eastern) or Hainan Airlines. Best English support, widest route networks, and standard international baggage allowances.
Budget Airlines (Cheap but Watch the Traps)#
| Airline | Chinese | Baggage Allowance | Seat Recline | Meals |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spring Airlines | 春秋航空 | 7 kg carry-on only — no free checked bag | ❌ Fixed seats | ❌ Buy onboard |
| 9 Air | 九元航空 | 7 kg carry-on — checked bag extra | ❌ Fixed | ❌ Buy onboard |
| West Air | 西部航空 | 7 kg carry-on — checked bag extra | Limited | ❌ Buy onboard |
The budget airline trap: Spring Airlines advertises ¥299 tickets, but adding a 20 kg checked bag costs ¥80–150 each way. A “cheap” ¥299 ticket becomes ¥450–600 — often more than a full-service airline on the same route. Always compare the total price including baggage before booking.
Where to Book: 3 Platforms Compared#
| Platform | English? | Accepts Int’l Cards | Service Fee | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trip.com | ✅ Full | ✅ Yes | Small (~¥30–50) | Tourists — easiest option |
| Fliggy (飞猪) | ⚠️ Partial | ⚠️ Through Alipay | None | Chinese-speaking travelers |
| Airline website | ⚠️ Varies | ⚠️ Some accept int’l cards | None | Direct booking, loyalty points |
Recommendation: Book on Trip.com. Full English, accepts international credit cards, shows all airlines and prices in one search. The small service fee is worth the convenience.
Booking Tips#
- Book 2–4 weeks ahead for the best prices. Last-minute domestic flights in China are often expensive
- Avoid peak periods — prices spike 2–3× during Chinese New Year (Jan/Feb), National Day (Oct 1–7), and Labor Day (May 1)
- Compare round-trip vs one-way — sometimes two one-ways are cheaper than a round-trip
- Morning flights are cheaper — 6–8 AM departures often have the lowest fares
- Flexible dates? Search ±3 days for the best price
Real Prices: Popular Tourist Routes#
| Route | Distance | Flight Time | Price Range (Economy) | HSR Alternative |

| Guangzhou → Sanya | 600 km | 1.5 h | ¥300–800 | ¥300, 3 h (HSR) |
Note: Prices are off-peak economy fares on full-service airlines. Budget airlines may be cheaper but add baggage fees. Prices during holidays can double or triple.
Name Format: The #1 Booking Mistake#
Enter your name EXACTLY as it appears on your passport.
- Format: SURNAME GIVENNAME, all capital letters
- Example: Passport says “SMITH/JOHN ROBERT” → Book as “SMITH JOHN ROBERT”
- No spaces between surname and given name? Don’t add any
- Middle name on passport? Include it. Not on passport? Don’t include it
If the name doesn’t match your passport exactly, you will be denied boarding. No refunds.
Airport Process: What Foreigners Need to Know#
Step 1: Arrive 2 Hours Before Departure#
Chinese airports are enormous. Security lines can be long. International travelers need passport checks at both check-in and the boarding gate.
Step 2: Check In#
| Method | How | Time Needed |
|---|---|---|
| Online check-in | Airline app or website (available 24–48 hours before) | Skip the counter |
| Self-service kiosk | Scan passport at airport kiosk → print boarding pass | 5 min |
| Counter check-in | Present passport at airline counter | 10–30 min (lines) |
Foreign passport holders: Some self-service kiosks don’t read foreign passports. If the kiosk fails, go to the counter — staff will check you in manually.
Seat selection: Available during booking (Trip.com) or check-in. Window seats fill fast on scenic routes (Chengdu → Lhasa, Guilin → anywhere).
Step 3: Security Check#
Chinese airport security is thorough:
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Passport | Required — show at security AND boarding gate |
| Liquids | Containers under 100 ml in a clear bag (same as international) |
| Power bank | Max 100 Wh, max 2 batteries, carry-on only (NEVER check in) |
| Water bottles | Empty or sealed — open containers may be confiscated |
| Laptops | Remove from bag for separate X-ray |
| Lighters / matches | One lighter allowed, carried on person (not in bag) |
| Self-heating food | ❌ Banned (自热食品 — self-heating hotpot, rice, etc.) |
| Knives / scissors | ❌ Banned (including Swiss army knives) |
Power bank rules are strictly enforced. If your power bank exceeds 100 Wh or is in your checked luggage, it will be confiscated at security. Most phone power banks (10,000–20,000 mAh at 3.7V = 37–74 Wh) are fine.
Step 4: Find Your Gate#
- Check the departure board for your flight number → gate assignment
- Gates can be 10–20 minutes walk from security in large airports
- Boarding closes 15–20 minutes before departure — don’t cut it close
- Gates may change — double-check the board 30 minutes before departure
Step 5: Boarding#
- Present your passport and boarding pass at the gate
- Some airlines check passports again at the aircraft door (especially Beijing flights)
- No priority boarding unless you paid for it or have status
Baggage Rules#
Full-Service Airlines#
| Carry-On | Checked | |
|---|---|---|
| Economy | 5–7 kg, 1 bag | 20–23 kg, 1 bag |
| Business | 7–10 kg, 2 bags | 30–32 kg, 2 bags |
Budget Airlines#
| Carry-On | Checked | |
|---|---|---|
| Economy | 7 kg, 1 bag | Not included — pay extra (¥80–200) |
Overweight fees: ¥1.5–2% of full economy fare per kg over the limit. On a ¥800 ticket, that’s ¥12–16 per excess kg. Expensive — weigh your bags at home.
Prohibited in checked luggage: Power banks, lithium batteries, flammable items, self-heating food. These MUST go in carry-on.
Delays: What to Expect#
Chinese domestic flights have a higher delay rate than most Western countries, especially at busy airports.
| Airport | On-Time Rate | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Beijing (PEK/PKX) | ~70% | Air traffic control, military airspace |
| Shanghai (PVG/SHA) | ~72% | Congestion, weather |
| Guangzhou (CAN) | ~75% | Weather (typhoons in summer) |
| Chengdu (CTU) | ~75% | Fog (winter), air traffic |
| Regional airports | ~80–85% | Less congestion |
What to Do When Delayed#
- Check the airline app — delays are updated in real-time
- Free meal voucher — airlines provide meals for delays over 2 hours (ask at the service counter)
- Hotel accommodation — for overnight delays caused by the airline
- Compensation — China has airline compensation regulations: delays over 4 hours may qualify for ¥200–800 compensation
- Switch to a train — if the delay is long and a high-speed rail option exists, cancel your flight and take the train
Foreigner-Specific Tips#
Passport: Your Only Valid ID#
Your passport is your boarding pass and ID. Chinese citizens use their national ID card. Foreigners use passports at:
- Check-in counter
- Security checkpoint
- Boarding gate
- Sometimes at the aircraft door
Always carry your physical passport. A photo on your phone is not accepted.
Beijing Flights: Extra Security#
Flights to and from Beijing have enhanced security screening. Arrive 2+ hours early for Beijing flights. Additional document checks are common.
No Mobile Payment at Airport?#
Some airport vendors only accept Alipay/WeChat. Carry ¥100–200 cash as backup for food and drinks.
Flight Attendants May Not Speak English#
Full-service airlines (Air China, China Southern, China Eastern) have English-speaking crew on most routes. Budget airlines and smaller carriers may not. Safety announcements are always in Chinese and English.
When to Fly vs Take the Train: 8 Route Decisions#
| Route | Flight Total Time* | HSR Time | Fly or Train? |

| Beijing → Xi’an | ~5 h | 4.5–6 h | Train (more reliable) |
| Beijing → Chengdu | ~5.5 h | 10+ h | Fly |
| Beijing → Kunming | ~6 h | 12+ h | Fly |
| Shanghai → Guangzhou | ~6 h | 8 h | Fly (saves 2 h) |
| Shanghai → Hangzhou | Not worth it | 1 h | Train |
| Chengdu → Chongqing | Not worth it | 1.5 h | Train |
| Chengdu → Lhasa | ~4 h | No HSR | Fly (only option) |
*Total time includes: arrive 2h early + flight + airport transfers each end
FAQ#
Can foreigners book domestic flights in China? Yes. Book through Trip.com with your passport name and international credit card. The process is the same as booking any flight online.
Do I need to print my boarding pass? No. Most airlines accept mobile boarding passes. But self-service kiosks at the airport can also print one. If you check in online, a mobile pass is sufficient.
What if my flight is cancelled? The airline will rebook you on the next available flight or offer a full refund. Go to the airline’s service counter at the airport. If you booked through Trip.com, you can also manage cancellations in the app.
Can I bring food on domestic flights in China? Yes, solid food is fine. Liquids over 100 ml are not allowed through security. Self-heating meals (self-heating hotpot, rice) are banned. Buy food after security or onboard.
Are Chinese airports safe? Very safe. China’s airports have strict security and low crime rates. Luggage theft is extremely rare.
Do I need to recheck bags on connecting flights? If both flights are on the same airline (or partner airlines) booked as one ticket, bags are checked through. If you booked separate tickets, you must collect and recheck bags.
Can I use my airline miles on Chinese airlines? Air China is Star Alliance, China Southern and China Eastern are SkyTeam. If you have miles with United, Lufthansa, Delta, or other alliance partners, you may be able to earn or redeem on Chinese domestic flights.
