Why Alipay Is Essential in China#
China is essentially a cashless society now. Street vendors, tiny noodle shops, temple entrance fees, bus rides — everything is paid by scanning a QR code with either Alipay or WeChat Pay. If you don’t have at least one of these apps set up, you’ll find yourself unable to buy a bottle of water, let alone book a hotel or pay for a taxi.
Alipay, owned by Ant Group (an Alibaba affiliate), is the larger of the two dominant payment platforms in China, with over a billion active users. For tourists, it has a major advantage over WeChat Pay: the International Version of the app is specifically designed for foreign visitors, and the setup process for linking overseas credit cards has improved significantly in 2026.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about Alipay as a tourist — from downloading and registering, to linking your foreign card, understanding the fee structure, paying everywhere from high-end malls to street carts, riding the metro with your phone, and fixing the most common errors.

Downloading and Installing Alipay#
iOS (iPhone)#
- Open the App Store
- Search for “Alipay” (支付宝)
- Download the app by Ant Group / Alipay.com
- The app is free and requires about 250 MB of storage
Android#
- Open Google Play Store and search “Alipay”
- Alternatively, download the APK from alipay.com — but only from the official site
- Allow installation from unknown sources if using APK
Tip: Download Alipay before you arrive in China. While you can access it through a VPN or by switching your App Store region, it’s much easier at home where Google Play and the App Store work normally.
Registration: Step by Step for Foreigners#
Step 1: Open the App and Tap “Sign Up”#
When you first open Alipay, you’ll see a login screen. Look for the “Sign Up” or “Register” link (it may be in small text at the bottom).
Step 2: Enter Your Phone Number#
Alipay requires a phone number for verification. Your foreign phone number works fine — just make sure to:
- Select the correct country code (+1 for US, +44 for UK, etc.)
- Have signal or Wi-Fi to receive the SMS verification code
- If the code doesn’t arrive, try the voice call option
Step 3: Set Your Password#
Create a login password (at least 8 characters with letters and numbers). You’ll also set a 6-digit payment password separately — this is used every time you make a payment.
Step 4: Passport Verification (Identity Confirmation)#
Alipay requires identity verification for foreign users. You’ll need to:
- Tap on your profile → Identity Verification
- Select “Non-Mainland China ID” or “Passport”
- Take a clear photo of your passport’s photo page
- Take a selfie for facial matching
- Wait for verification (usually 1-24 hours, sometimes instant)
Common issue: Passport verification taking too long? We have a dedicated troubleshooting guide.
International Version vs Standard UI#
When you register with a foreign phone number, Alipay should automatically offer the International Version — an interface with English translations for the most common features. You can also manually switch:
- Go to Me → Settings (gear icon) → Language → select English
The International Version simplifies the interface but doesn’t change the underlying functionality. Some features (like certain mini-programs) will still display in Chinese. For a detailed comparison, see our Alipay International Version 2026 guide.
Linking Foreign Cards#
This is the most important step. Without a linked payment method, Alipay is just a QR code reader.
Which Cards Work?#
| Card Type | Works? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Visa | ✅ Yes | Most widely accepted |
| Mastercard | ✅ Yes | Works well |
| American Express | ⚠️ Partial | Some merchants decline |
| JCB | ⚠️ Partial | Less common |
| UnionPay (foreign-issued) | ✅ Yes | No 3% fee |
Step-by-Step: Linking Your Card#
- Open Alipay → tap Me → Bank Cards
- Tap the "+" button to add a new card
- Enter your card number, expiry date, and CVV
- Enter the billing address (your home address is fine)
- Complete 3D Secure verification (your bank will send a code)
- Card appears in your wallet with a small lock icon → ready to use
The 3% Foreign Card Fee — What You Need to Know#
When you pay with a foreign Visa or Mastercard through Alipay, transactions under 200 RMB are free of the Alipay fee. For transactions over 200 RMB, Alipay charges approximately 3%. Your card issuer may also charge a foreign transaction fee (typically 1-3%).
Workarounds:
- Split payments: If you’re buying something for 400 RMB, ask the merchant to split it into two 200 RMB charges. See our Alipay 3% fee threshold guide for more strategies.
- TourCard (Bank of Shanghai): Alipay offers a virtual prepaid card that avoids the 3% fee. Read our Alipay TourCard 2026 review for details.
- Top up Alipay Balance: Use Wise or Revolut to add RMB to your Alipay balance, then pay from balance (no 3% fee). See our Alipay Balance top-up via Wise/Revolut guide.
Using Alipay to Pay#
Scanning a Merchant’s QR Code (扫一扫)#
This is the most common payment flow in China:
- Open Alipay
- Tap “Scan” (扫一扫) at the top of the home screen
- Point your camera at the merchant’s QR code (usually printed on a sticker at the counter)
- Enter the amount (or it’s pre-filled by the merchant)
- Enter your 6-digit payment password
- Done — you’ll see a green checkmark confirmation
Letting the Merchant Scan You (付款码)#
At larger stores, the merchant may prefer to scan your phone:
- Open Alipay
- Tap “Pay” (收付款) — usually shown as a QR code on the home screen
- Show your screen to the merchant’s scanner
- Enter your payment password if prompted
- Payment confirmed
Payment Password vs PassCode#
Alipay uses two different authentication methods:
- Payment Password: A 6-digit code you set during registration. Used for most transactions.
- PassCode: A shorter code used for quick small payments. Less common for foreigners.
Confused? See our Alipay PassCode vs Payment Password explainer.
Transaction Limits for Unverified Users#
If you haven’t completed passport verification, Alipay imposes limits:
| Verification Status | Single Transaction Limit | Daily Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Unverified | 1,000 RMB | 3,000 RMB |
| Verified (passport) | 5,000 RMB | 20,000 RMB |
| Verified + bank card | 10,000+ RMB | 50,000+ RMB |
Complete verification as soon as possible — it makes a huge difference for hotel bookings and train tickets.
Can You Pay at Street Vendors?#
Yes! Almost every street food cart, fruit stand, and market stall in China accepts Alipay. They’ll have a printed QR code — often on a piece of cardboard or laminated paper. Just scan and enter the amount.
For more on this, see our guide to paying with Alipay at street vendors.
Split Payment Strategy#
When your purchase exceeds 200 RMB and you want to avoid the 3% foreign card fee:
- Ask the merchant: “Kěyǐ fēn cì fùkuǎn ma?” (可以分次付款吗? — Can I pay in installments?)
- They’ll usually agree to split the bill into smaller amounts
- Pay each portion separately — each under 200 RMB
Alipay Transport QR: Ride Metro and Bus#
One of Alipay’s most useful features for tourists is the built-in transport QR code that works like a subway card — no physical card needed.
Setting It Up#
- Open Alipay
- Tap “Transport” (出行) on the home screen — it’s usually a bus/train icon
- Select your city (Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, etc.)
- Agree to the terms for that city’s transit system
- A QR code appears — hold it near the turnstile scanner
How to Use#
- Before entering the metro station, open Alipay → Transport
- Hold your phone screen near the turnstile’s QR scanner
- The gate opens — walk through
- When you arrive at your destination, do the same to exit
- The fare is automatically charged to your linked card or Alipay balance
Supported Cities (2026)#
Alipay Transport QR works in virtually every major Chinese city with a metro system, including:
- Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Wuhan, Xi’an, Chongqing, Suzhou, Tianjin, and 30+ more cities
- Also works on buses in most cities
Tip: The first time you use Transport QR in a new city, you may need to agree to that city’s specific terms. After that, it remembers.
For detailed instructions, see our Alipay Transport QR for Metro and Bus guide.
Alipay Mini-Programs#
Mini-programs are lightweight apps that run inside Alipay (and WeChat). Many businesses in China operate primarily through mini-programs rather than standalone apps.
Useful Mini-Programs for Tourists#
| Mini-Program | What It Does | How to Find It |
|---|---|---|
| Luckin Coffee | Order and pay for coffee | Search “Luckin” in Alipay |
| Didi | Book rides | Search “Didi” |
| Ele.me | Food delivery | Search “Eleme” or 饿了么 |
| Meituan | Food delivery, hotels, tickets | Search “Meituan” or 美团 |
| Helen’s / KTV | Book karaoke rooms | Search the venue name |
To access mini-programs:
- On Alipay’s home screen, search for the brand name in the search bar
- Or tap “Mini Programs” to browse categories
- Once opened, the mini-program behaves like a standalone app
Top-Up and Balance Management#
Topping Up via Wise or Revolut#
If you have a Wise or Revolut account with CNY, you can top up your Alipay balance directly:
- Open Alipay → Me → Balance (余额)
- Tap “Top Up” (充值)
- Select your funding source
- Enter the amount
Note: This process varies depending on your Wise/Revolut setup. See our detailed Alipay Balance top-up guide for step-by-step instructions.
Balance Frozen?#
If Alipay freezes your balance (usually due to a security flag or incomplete verification):
- Go to Me → Balance → you’ll see a message explaining the freeze
- Usually you need to complete identity verification or upload additional documents
- Contact Alipay customer service via the app if it persists
See our Alipay balance frozen help guide for solutions.
Resetting Your Payment Password#
If you forget your payment password and you’re abroad:
- Open Alipay → Me → Settings → Security Settings
- Tap “Payment Password” → “Forgot Password”
- Verify your identity via SMS to your registered phone number
- Set a new 6-digit password
For more details, see our guide to resetting your Alipay payment password abroad.
Common Errors and Fixes#
“System Busy” Error With Foreign Cards#
This is the #1 complaint from foreign users. The error appears when trying to pay with a linked Visa/Mastercard.
Quick fixes:
- Try again — sometimes it’s a temporary server issue
- Switch payment method — use Alipay balance instead of foreign card
- Check your card — some banks decline China transactions; call your bank
- Update the app — older versions have more frequent errors
- Clear app cache — Settings → General → Clear Cache
- Try a different card — Visa tends to work better than Mastercard
- Use TourCard — the virtual prepaid card rarely triggers this error
For the full troubleshooting walkthrough, see our Alipay “System Busy” error fix guide.
Passport Verification Taking Too Long#
Normal verification takes 1-24 hours. If it’s been longer:
- Check that your passport photo is clear and all text is readable
- Make sure the selfie matches your passport photo (no sunglasses, hat, etc.)
- Try uploading again under Me → Identity Verification
- Contact Alipay support via the app’s help center
See our passport verification troubleshooting guide for more.
NFC Payment Support#
As of 2026, Alipay does not support standard NFC tap-to-pay for foreign users. Payment is exclusively through QR codes (scanning or being scanned). Apple Pay and Google Pay are not accepted at Chinese merchants — even though some terminals have NFC hardware, the backend doesn’t support foreign wallets.
Alipay vs WeChat Pay: A Quick Comparison#
| Feature | Alipay | WeChat Pay |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign card support | ✅ Excellent (International Version) | ✅ Good (improved in 2026) |
| English interface | ✅ Full International Version | ⚠️ Partial |
| 3% foreign card fee | Over 200 RMB per transaction | Over 200 RMB per transaction |
| Transport QR | ✅ Built-in | ✅ Via mini-program |
| Mini-programs | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes (more extensive) |
| Street vendor acceptance | ✅ Universal | ✅ Universal |
| Setup difficulty | ⭐⭐ Easy | ⭐⭐⭐ Moderate |
| Best for | Payments, transport, shopping | Social + payments combined |
Our recommendation: Set up both Alipay and WeChat Pay before you arrive. Some merchants prefer one over the other, and having a backup is essential. For a deep dive, read our full Alipay vs WeChat Pay for tourists comparison and our WeChat complete guide.
Alipay Checklist for Tourists#
- Download Alipay before arriving in China
- Register with your foreign phone number
- Complete passport verification (take clear photos!)
- Link at least one foreign Visa or Mastercard
- Set up Transport QR for your first city
- Save your payment password somewhere secure
- Test a small payment (buy a bottle of water)
- Keep Alipay and WeChat Pay as backup for each other
Frequently Asked Questions#
Can I use Alipay without a Chinese phone number?#
Yes. Alipay accepts foreign phone numbers (+1, +44, +61, etc.) for registration. You need to be able to receive an SMS verification code, which works fine on Wi-Fi or with your roaming data.
Does Alipay work without internet?#
No. Alipay requires an active internet connection to process payments. Make sure you have a data plan (an eSIM is your best bet — see our best eSIM for China guide) or reliable Wi-Fi.
What happens if my payment fails?#
Most payment failures are due to: (1) your bank declining the transaction — call your bank to authorize China transactions, (2) the 3% fee threshold — try splitting the payment, or (3) a “System Busy” error — see our fix guide.
Can I get a refund through Alipay?#
Yes, refunds go back to your original payment method. For foreign cards, it typically takes 5-15 business days. For Alipay balance, it’s instant.
Is Alipay safe to use?#
Alipay uses industry-standard encryption and fraud detection. Your payment password is required for every transaction, and you can enable fingerprint/Face ID for additional security. As with any financial app, use strong passwords and don’t share your verification codes.
Do I need both Alipay and WeChat Pay?#
We strongly recommend having both. While Alipay has better English support, some merchants only accept WeChat Pay, and vice versa. Having both also gives you a backup if one app has issues. See our essential apps guide for the full list of apps you need.
